Visiting Orphans
Today
we visited 2 different orphanages and met 26 that have their paperwork
completed making them available for adoption. Lots of wonderful boys!
There are some real sweet kids that we will tell you about soon. Maybe
one of them will be your child. The orphans were so excited about the
hats we brought that the Effingham, Illinois ladies crocheted for them.
Photos will be posted when we get the chance.

Putting the Puzzle Together
Yesterday
we were all excited to visit the orphanage where Victoria use to live.
We discovered that the translator we had when we adopted Victoria 4
years ago had misinterpreted and gave us wrong information about where
she had lived. The visit started by going to visit the orphanage
director at the new orphanage location. He pulled out Victoria’s
official file and we were able to see a picture that was taken of her
the day she arrived at the orphanage when she was only 10 days old.
There were several copies of it and we were given 2 of them. This will
mean a lot to Victoria someday since she was probably at least 7 months
old in pictures that we have. Her footprints were also in the file and
her government I.D. card. The file also contained a copy of the photo
I.D. card of the woman that found Victoria. I asked him if he knows
where she lives because we would really like to meet her. He said that
she lived in an area where the people were all relocated so he does not
know where she is now. The director allowed us to take pictures of
anything we wanted in her file. He said that when a child turns 18, the
government allows the person to request her file, so she will be able to
have everything else in it someday.
I asked if we could go to the old orphanage, meet Victoria’s foster mother, and go to her finding place. He said yes.
Four
years ago, we had been told that Victoria lived at the old orphanage
and during the process of moving to the new orphanage, that she had
lived in a foster home for 1 month and then moved to the new orphanage.
We were quite surprised to learn that Victoria never lived in the new
orphanage, but in fact lived at the old orphanage and then moved next
door to live with foster parents. Her foster mother had actually been
the woman that cared for her while she lived in the orphanage and when
other children moved to the new orphanage, Victoria was one of the three
babies that moved into the apartment with her foster parents.
The
old orphanage is only a short distance from the new one. When we got
out of the van, people were drying noodles in their front yard. Noodles
were everywhere. And there stood the orphanage that is now rather run
down. It is now used for another business and it looks like some people
live there too. Victoria’s foster mother came outside to greet us when
we arrived. She was so happy to see Victoria and said she remembered her
well and that Victoria was the last baby to leave her home before her
retirement. We were able to look through the window of the room that
Victoria lived in while at the orphanage. Then the foster mother invited
us to her apartment.
At
the apartment, we also got to meet Victoria’s foster father. They are
probably in their 70’s and are raising their 1 year old granddaughter.
They had a nice 2 bedroom apartment with a living room, kitchen and
bathroom. We even got to see the crib that Victoria used to sleep in. We
were able to visit with them for a long time and Victoria enjoyed
playing with their little granddaughter. The foster mother thanked us
for coming to see them and expressed her gratitude for us adopting
Victoria. We told her how thankful we are that she cared for our baby.
She told us that Victoria will always be part of her family and she said
that makes us part of her family too. She asked that we all come back
and visit again someday. We left with hugs and tears of thankfulness in
learning that our daughter was loved and well cared for. What a blessing
to have been able to put some of the pieces of the puzzle together and
find that the pieces are so much better than we ever thought they were.
Water Buffalo
Ever since Veggie Tales came out with a song about how everyone needs a
water buffalo, some of our children have been very interested in seeing a
water buffalo. We had never seen one until this trip. As we rode the
train for 6 ½ hours to Nanchang, there were many water buffalo that we
rode past, most of them in rice fields. It was fun to see all of the
water buffalo, but we had an even more exciting experience when
traveling in a van and saw a couple of water buffalo walking next to the
rode with their owners. The driver was kind enough to pull over so we
could get a good look at the water buffalo. The translator explained to
the farmer that Daniel would like to pet his water buffalo and he even
offered for Daniel to sit on it. The water buffalo looked nervous, so we
declined the buffalo ride, but the kids were excited to get their
pictures taken with it.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
We were unable to get a direct flight to China, so it was an adventure getting here. We drove to Chicago on Monday and picked up our Visas at the Chinese consulate. On Tuesday,
we flew from Chicago to Japan, which took about 13 hours. In Japan, we
had a 4 ½ hour layover, followed by a 3 ¾ hours flight to Shanghai. A
shuttle bus was supposed to pick us up, but we could not find it.
Eventually, we were able to find a lady who helped us call the hotel.
About 1 ½ hours later, we were on the shuttle headed for the hotel.
Fortunately, Marshall, Daniel, Trevor and Victoria were able to sleep
for about 4 hours before we needed to take another train. I, on the
other hand, was so mixed up on time that after sleeping only one hour,
thought that it was 4 hours later and got ready for the day. At 5:30 am,
we left for the train station to take a train to Nanchang in Jiangxi
Province.

Leaving for China in the Morning!
We left for Chicago this morning to pick up our visas at the Chinese Consulate. That went smoothly and now we are at the hotel. In the morning, we will be on a flight to China! The first leg is from Chicago to Tokyo. It would be great to see Japan for a couple of hours during the layover, but we do not have visas for Japan. After a 4.5 hour layover, we fly to Shanghai and arrive late tomorrow night. Or I guess that is the next morning here! It gets confusing with the 14 hour time difference.
The following morning, a driver will pick us up at the hotel and take us to the train station for a 6.5 hour train ride to Nanchang. We will stay at the hotel where we stayed when we met our little Victoria for the first time and became her parents. The following day, we will visit Victoria's former orphanage for the first time. After several hours at the orphanage, we will return to Nanchang for the night.
The next morning, we will take a train to Changsha. We cannot get the twins until January 14th (January 13th in the United States). Our contact in China has us scheduled to visit a couple of other orphanages before we get Annaliese and Aliza to meet orphans so that we can come back and find the boys and girls families. I will let you know about the orphans we meet in case you realize one of them is your son or daughter! :)
Thank you friends, for all of the prayers, encouragement and financial help to give 2 little girls a family! We appreciate everything so much!
